Description:
Hello! My girlfriend and I are interested in finding an incubator plot or land to lease for the fall of 2023. Would prefer to either live in housing provided or bring a trailer or yurt to the acreage.I am currently an intern at Vets on the Farm, where I am learning about organic market gardening with cost, time and manpower saving sustainable approaches. These include: drip irrigation set up and maintenance, tree cloning, crop rotation, companion cropping, washing and preparing produce for sale at markets. Developing a system that keeps track of who harvested, washed and packaged produce from each specific row in order to trace any potential microbe contamination. Care and upkeep of chickens, ducks, and composting. Use of a BCS tractor and turf builder for prepping rows in between harvesting and seeding.
Other pursuits outside of farming include sheep shearing, hide tanning, and butchery. My girlfriend and I have recently completed a sheep shearing class through University of Idaho and are looking for other opportunities to gain experience. I am also a board member with River City Youth Ops, a Spokane nonprofit that focuses on getting at-risk youth involved in urban farming and food production.
Our long term goal is to start with a small scale market herb and vegetable farm with permaculture inspired silvopasture system. Involving nut, fruit and timber trees, along with meat, dairy, and fiber animals (most likely goats and alpacas). The plan is to grow our own animal hay and animal feed. Beekeeping is also a goal. Potentially expanding to larger animals like Sheep, Yak, Bison and Llamas as time goes by.
Another long term goal is contributing to local food system stability by donating to programs that assist the elderly and the homeless.
Will complete beekeeping and farm management courses before the end of the year using funds and support from Vets on the Farm.
Other experience includes integrating permaculture approaches to gardening in my girlfriend's trailer park lot garden by planting native berry bushes, a fruit tree and using companion planting of vegetables and flowers. We have also started a grape trellis with the goal of shading the southern side of her trailer while also providing fruit and edible leaves.
Have completed substantial work on rebuilding trailer using sustainable methods. In the long run we'd like to incorporate grey water practices.
