Description:
David grew up on a 5 acre plot of land and helped with gardening about an acre of land when he was young over the years. He moved to Alaska and lived off grid for 15 years and attempted to garden with minimal water resources and a very harsh environment with a short growing season. He assisted with raising 120 pheasant one year.Rachel has helped raise a pig and grew up on land with a few fruit trees and bushes. She helped maintain the yard and landscaping through her younger years on the property.
Together, we have one strong summer of intense gardening experience on an approximate 40’X60’ garden space with a small greenhouse that housed tomatoes and seedling starts. We planted a large variety of food including:
- Herbs: Dill, Oregano, two types of Basil, Mint, Sage, Chives,
- Squash: Yellow crook neck, Hubbard, Ornamentals, Spaghetti, Butternut
- Greens: Chard, Kale, Lettuce
- AND: Cherry Tomatoes, Carrots, Broccoli, Beets, Peas, Beans, Corn, Zucchini, Cucumber, Pumpkin, Potatoes, Radishes, Onions, Rhubarb, and Cantaloupe
With so much food, we decided to make signs and asked for donations for food and shared with neighbors, friends, and family. Approximately 100-150lbs of food was shared from our garden.
In the future, we would like to have chickens (potentially more livestock) and continue to enjoy an intensive farm life with a variety of fruits and vegetables. We would like to expand into micro greens and a variety of mushrooms. Also, we plan to learn about growing grains and incorporate this crop as well. We would like to share food with the community and also sell some of what we grow. In the future, we would like to operate a farm stand and grow specialty items to supply to restaurants and co-ops.
