Description:Who we are:
We are a couple of young farmers who have been farming full-time since April 2022. My name is Daniela. I am 26 years old and my partner, David, is 30 years old. Both hailing from large cities in the east and the south, we came to WA looking for our purpose back in 2018. We both got full time jobs, me as a teacher and coach, and my boyfriend as a broadcast news producer. It wasn’t long until we were exposed to farming, and once we did, we fell in love with farm life.
Our journey as a couple began in 2015, and ever since we have been each other’s cheerleaders in finding both of our passions. We were determined to find better lives that led to us feeling fulfilled and rejuvenated. We didn’t find that until we left our regular jobs and began farming full-time just over a year ago. It was a transition for sure but one in which we were excited to wake up every morning to take care of 80 pigs, so many baby piglets, and about 200 chickens. Within a few months of being on this farm, both of us became farm managers and I became the market manager as well. It was shocking that within 6 months we essentially were running a full-time meat production farm. Now that we have been here over a year, boyfriend and I are ready and eager to find a farm where we can continue to build on our knowledge and possibly call our own farm.
For over a year now, we have been humanely and ethically caring for pastured-raised poultry, hogs, and cattle. Our duties revolved around everything regarding general animal husbandry, including but not limited to: animal nutrition, feeding, watering, infrastructure construction/maintenance, deep bedding methods, manure composting, parasite control methods, breed stock selection, breeding, farrowing baby pigs, rotational grazing, fencing, USDA and WSDA processing, on-farm slaughter and butchery. We’ve been deeply involved with the entire process from the animal’s birth to packaged meat.
In addition, we have also done garden work, including building up greenhouses, re-setting hoop plastic covers, fertilization, planting, weed control methods, harvesting, washing, compost utilization, irrigation,
When it comes to heavy machinery, we have experience with tractors, Bobcats, manure spreaders, smokers, and other large farm vehicles.
We also have experience in the marketing side of farming. I have been the market manager for over a year now, and my duties included: inventory control, online sales/orders, managing the mailing list, running 3 farmer’s markets a week during the summers, establishing a farmstand and customer acquisition, social media marketing, and overall customer relations.
